The newest addition of the ranks of yet another city to receive an “update” in their scenery is of course Manahattan New York metropolitan area. This is not an unusual occurrence as other huge cities; most notably Hong Kong and Sao Paulo have already provided a home for the giant rubber duckling. This newest visit has made artist reps located in these cities overjoyed..
Getting the “Mama Duck” to swim across the water is no easy feat as she weighs 11-tons, however the Hong Kong art market boomed once the city introduced this giant “art” piece during the city’s festivities.
This monstrous inflatable creature is the work of famous Dutch conceptual artist Florentijn Hofman, who visited Oyster Bay, Long Island, in October, according to the New York Post; and is considered one of the most acclaimed artists anywhere due to his magnificent creation.
Previously, the duck, which is a favorite on all social media forums, has appeared in Hong Kong, Osaka, Sydney, São Paulo and Amsterdam.
On a few past occasions, Mr. Hofman has made it clear in a statement that he takes his large “artwork” very seriously, and that she should not be considered as just “a piece” for the Hong Kong art market.
Many art buyers mock his artwork; however Florentijn was clear on the subject with the statement: “The rubber duck is not a joke,” to Philadelphia magazine. He continued: “It is serious artwork which connects all people in the world.” We can safely assume he intended more for his creation than just it becoming a part of the Hong Kong art scene.
At least one instance of “fake duck” was made known to the public in July, when an unlicensed adaptation of the Mr. Hofman’s work was supposed to appear at the Tall Ships Festival in Philadelphia. Of course, this was something he would not stand for as he was not compensated for his artwork to be displayed.
The duck itself was later deflated, the action which brought tears to a lot of people in Philly.
